Kevin Smith

Kevin Smith is the director of WAC and an associate professor in the English. He came to WAC in 2026 after five years co-directing the UVA Writing Center with Claire Chantell. He teaches undergraduate courses in digital media, public writing, and community engagement for the Writing & Rhetoric program, and graduate pedagogy courses in English. His research is focused on students’ experiences of writing over time, across contexts, and using different media. His book, Getting Learning Right: The Promise of Higher Education (written with Chris W. Gallagher and Kristi Girdharry) was published by MIT Press in August 2026.
